Matching the noise or smell to its likely cause helps us bring the right parts, and helps you decide how urgent it is. Tell us what you hear, where it seems to come from and when it happens.

What you might notice

  • Buzzing or humming from the outdoor unit
  • Grinding, squealing or scraping from a fan or motor
  • Rattling or banging
  • Musty or mildew smell from vents
  • Burning, electrical or hot-dust smell

Common causes

Buzzing or humming

Often a failing capacitor or contactor, or a motor that can't start. A hum with no fan movement needs attention soon.

Grinding or squealing

Worn motor bearings or a fan blade striking something.

Rattling

Loose panels, debris in the outdoor unit or a loose fan blade.

Musty smell

Moisture in the drain pan, coil or ducts. Usually a drain or humidity issue. We identify the source; we don't make mold or health claims.

Burning or electrical smell

Overheating wiring, motors or electrical parts. Shut the system off.

Hot-dust smell at first heat

Dust burning off heat strips on the first cool morning is normal if it fades quickly.

Safe checks you can make first

  • Note when the sound happens: startup, running or shutdown
  • Look for debris in or on the outdoor unit
  • Check that the air handler panel is secure
  • Check the drain pan for standing water if the smell is musty
Switch the system off and call (408) 320-5050 if: you smell burning or electrical odors, hear loud grinding or banging, or the outdoor unit hums without the fan turning.

How a Uniform technician diagnoses it

We trace the sound or smell to its source, test motors, capacitors and electrical connections, inspect fans and mounting, and check the coil, pan and drain for moisture sources. Findings and options come in writing.
