Weak airflow or uneven cooling

Some rooms comfortable, others stuffy? Weak air from certain vents? The cause can be as simple as a filter or as involved as the duct design.

Airflow problems fall into two groups: the whole house gets too little air, which points to the filter, blower or coil, or some rooms get too little, which points to the ducts, the room's heat load or the design. Walking through the house room by room is the fastest way to tell them apart.

What you might notice

  • Low air volume from all vents
  • One or two rooms always warmer than the rest
  • Bonus rooms, upstairs or west-facing rooms that never cool down
  • Doors that slam or whistle when the AC runs
  • Dust or a musty smell from certain vents

Common causes

Filter and coil

A clogged filter or dirty evaporator coil restricts all airflow.

Blower issues

A weak blower motor, failing capacitor or wrong speed setting.

Duct leaks and disconnects

Ducts in the attic pull apart, tear or get crushed, sending cooled air into the attic.

Not enough return air

Closed-door rooms without returns can't push air back to the system.

Room load and sizing

Large windows, sun exposure or an addition the system was never sized for.

Safe checks you can make first

  • Replace the filter
  • Open all supply vents fully and clear furniture off returns
  • Check that interior doors aren't cutting off rooms without returns
  • Note which rooms are warm and at what time of day
Switch the system off and call (408) 320-5050 if: airflow is very weak everywhere and the air is getting warmer, or you see ice on the lines. See frozen AC coil.

How a Uniform technician diagnoses it

We measure total airflow and static pressure at the air handler, then supply airflow and temperatures room by room. That shows whether the problem is the equipment or the distribution. Accessible ducts are inspected for leaks, disconnects and crushed runs.

Frequently asked questions

Should I close vents in unused rooms?

Generally no. Closing many vents raises pressure in the ducts and can reduce total airflow and efficiency.

Why is upstairs always hotter?

Heat rises, roof heat is greater, and upstairs ducts are often longest. Duct and return improvements usually help.

Is a bigger AC the fix?

Rarely. Distribution problems need distribution fixes.
