A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In cooling mode it works like any AC. On the few cool Florida mornings it moves heat into the home, often backed up by electric heat strips in the air handler. Problems usually show up in the switch between modes, or in the backup heat.

When to call

  • No heat on a cool morning, or only lukewarm air
  • The thermostat shows auxiliary or emergency heat running a lot
  • It cools poorly but heats fine, or the reverse
  • Loud whooshing or long defrost cycles
  • A burning-dust smell that doesn't fade after the first use of the season

What the work covers

Reversing valve and controls

The valve and solenoid that switch the system between heating and cooling.

Defrost controls

Boards and sensors that clear frost from the outdoor coil in heating mode.

Auxiliary heat strips

Electric backup heat in the air handler, including sequencers and safety limits.

All the AC components

Compressor, fans, capacitors, coils, drain and refrigerant circuit, as with any air conditioner.

How we do it

We test the system in both modes, check the thermostat configuration (a common cause of aux heat running too much), verify the reversing valve and defrost operation, and measure heat strip current. See heat pump problems for the symptoms we see most.

Your options

OptionWhen it fits
RepairA control, valve, sensor or heat strip has failed on a sound system.
Thermostat correctionThe thermostat is set up for the wrong system type or staging.
ReplacementThe compressor or coil has failed on an older unit. Heat pumps are rated with SEER2 and HSPF2; see SEER2 explained.

What affects the price

You get a written estimate after diagnosis or assessment, before any work starts. These are the things that move the number:

  • Which component failed
  • Refrigerant leak repair, if needed
  • Heat strip size and electrical condition
  • System age and warranty

More detail is in our Naples AC repair cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heat pump the same as an AC?

In cooling mode, yes. A heat pump adds a reversing valve so it can also heat. Most Florida homes use one.

Why does my outdoor unit steam in winter?

That's usually a normal defrost cycle. Frequent or very long defrost cycles are worth a check.

Do you service pool heat pumps?

Pool heat pumps are specialized equipment. Ask when you call and we'll tell you if your local Uniform team services them.
