Frozen AC coil or refrigerant line

Ice on an air conditioner in Florida sounds impossible, but it happens. It means something is wrong with airflow or refrigerant, and running the system iced can damage the compressor.

The indoor coil is supposed to be cold, just above freezing. If air can't move across it fast enough, or the refrigerant charge is wrong, the coil drops below freezing and moisture from the air turns to ice. The ice blocks even more airflow and the problem feeds itself.

What you might notice

  • Ice or frost on the copper line at the outdoor or indoor unit
  • Weak airflow from vents
  • Air that gets less cold over a few hours
  • Water around the air handler as ice melts
  • The system runs constantly

Common causes

Restricted airflow

Clogged filters, closed or blocked vents and returns, or a dirty evaporator coil.

Blower problems

A failing blower motor or capacitor, or a fan speed set too low.

Low refrigerant

A leak lowers the pressure and temperature in the coil.

Running in cool conditions

Running the AC with a very low setpoint on cooler nights can contribute on some systems.

Safe checks you can make first

  • Switch the thermostat from Cool to Off
  • Set the fan to On to help thaw the coil (a few hours)
  • Replace the filter if it's dirty
  • Open closed supply vents and clear return grilles
  • Place towels where melting ice might drip
Switch the system off and call (408) 320-5050 if: ice returns after the system is thawed and restarted, or you see oily residue on refrigerant lines (a sign of a leak).

How a Uniform technician diagnoses it

Once the coil is thawed, we check airflow first: filter, blower, coil cleanliness, duct restrictions and static pressure. Then we check the refrigerant circuit. We don't recommend adding refrigerant until we've looked for and found the leak.

Repair options

OptionWhen it fits
Restore airflowFilter, blocked returns or a dirty coil caused the freeze.
Blower repairThe blower motor or capacitor has failed.
Leak repair and rechargeRefrigerant is low and the leak can be repaired.
Coil replacementThe evaporator coil is leaking and can't be repaired.

You get a written estimate after diagnosis and before any work starts. See what changes a quote in our Naples AC repair cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to thaw?

Often a few hours with the fan running. Large ice buildup can take longer.

Can I chip off the ice?

No. You can damage the coil fins or refrigerant lines. Let it melt.

Will a recharge fix it?

Only if the leak is also repaired. Otherwise the problem returns.
