High electric bill from air conditioning
Cooling is usually the largest part of a Southwest Florida power bill. When it jumps without a change in how you live, the system is telling you something.

Start by comparing the same month to last year, not last month, since weather changes so much. A real jump with similar weather usually means the system is running longer to do the same work. We can't promise a specific saving, but we can find what's making it work harder.
What you might notice
- Bill noticeably higher than the same month last year
- System runs longer or never shuts off
- Some rooms warmer than before
- Home feels humid even with the AC on
- Outdoor coil visibly dirty
Common causes
Dirty filter or coils
Restricted airflow and dirty coils make the system run longer for the same cooling.
Duct leaks
Cooled air lost into a hot attic, and hot attic air pulled into the returns.
Refrigerant leaks
Reduced capacity means longer runtimes.
Thermostat settings
Fan on "On", a schedule that cools an empty house, or a poorly placed thermostat.
Aging or oversized equipment
Older, less efficient equipment, or short cycling from oversizing.
Safe checks you can make first
- Compare usage with the same month last year
- Replace the filter
- Check thermostat schedules and set the fan to Auto
- Clear plants and debris from around the outdoor unit
- Look in the attic (safely) for obviously disconnected ducts
How a Uniform technician diagnoses it
We measure the system's performance (temperature split, airflow, amperage and refrigerant), inspect coils and accessible ducts, and review your thermostat setup. You get a written list of what's costing you, ranked from least to most expensive to fix.
Repair options
| Option | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Maintenance and coil cleaning | Dirty coils and filters. See AC maintenance. |
| Duct sealing | Measurable duct leakage. |
| Leak repair | Low refrigerant has reduced capacity. |
| Replacement assessment | An old, inefficient or badly sized system. See SEER2 explained. |
You get a written estimate after diagnosis and before any work starts. See what changes a quote in our Naples AC repair cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much will I save with a new AC?
It depends on your current system, the new one, your home and your usage. We'll explain the factors but won't promise a specific saving.
Does raising the thermostat help?
Yes. Each degree warmer reduces runtime. A smart schedule for times nobody is home helps too.
Can my utility help?
Florida utilities publish energy-saving tips and sometimes offer programs. Check with your provider.
