You'll find rules of thumb online that multiply age by repair cost. They're a starting point at best. The better approach is to look at the system's actual condition and your goals.
Lean toward repair when
- The failed part is minor (capacitor, contactor, fan motor, drain)
- The system is in good condition otherwise and comfort is fine
- It uses a current refrigerant
- Repairs have been rare
Consider replacement when
- The compressor or a coil has failed on an older system
- The system uses R-22 and needs significant refrigerant
- Repairs are becoming regular
- The home has never been comfortable or humid control is poor (sizing)
- Bills keep rising despite maintenance
- You're remodeling or adding space
Questions to ask before you decide
- What exactly failed, and can you show me?
- What's the repair cost in writing?
- What else is worn and likely to fail soon?
- If I replace, what size, and based on what calculation?
- What warranties apply to each option?
Our technicians quote the repair first. If replacement deserves a look, we'll say why in writing, and you can get a second opinion.
