What SEER2 means
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures cooling output over a season divided by electricity used. Higher means more efficient. It replaced the older SEER rating in 2023 with a test that better reflects real duct conditions, so SEER2 numbers are lower than old SEER numbers for the same equipment. Heat pumps also carry an HSPF2 heating rating.
Minimum standards in Florida
Since January 1, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy sets regional minimums. Florida is in the Southeast region, where new split-system central air conditioners must meet a higher minimum than in northern states. The exact minimum depends on equipment type and size. Your contractor should confirm the current requirement for your installation; standards and refrigerant rules have changed recently and are verified at the time of each project.
Refrigerant changes
Under EPA rules, new residential systems are moving to lower-global-warming refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. Older R-22 is no longer produced. Ask which refrigerant a proposed system uses and what that means for future service.
Beyond the rating
- A load calculation so the system is sized for your home
- Humidity performance: variable-speed and two-stage equipment often dehumidify better
- Duct condition: leaky ducts erase efficiency gains
- Correct refrigerant charge and airflow at installation
- Your utility rates and how many hours you run the system
Utility rebates and federal incentives change. Check your utility's current programs and ask us what's available at the time you buy.
